What is shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection affecting the nerves and skin. It occurs when the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, reactivates in the body. Symptoms of shingles, such as fever, headache, and a painful or itchy rash, resemble those of chickenpox.

Although chickenpox typically occurs once in a lifetime, the virus remains dormant in the body and can resurface as shingles later in life. The risk of shingles increases with age, particularly if the immune system is weakened due to illness or medical procedures. While shingles isn’t directly transmissible, the chickenpox virus can be passed on during a shingles outbreak.

To reduce the risk of shingles, vaccination is recommended. The shingles vaccine effectively protects against the condition, although it doesn’t prevent chickenpox. To prevent chicken pox, see the Chicken Pox Vaccination.

Shingles Vaccination (Shingrix Vaccine)

At Cleland Pharmacy, we provide vaccination against shingles using the highly effective non-live vaccine, Shingrix, developed by GSK. Shingrix is recommended for adults aged 50 and over to protect against shingles (herpes zoster) and post-herpetic neuralgia, a long-lasting nerve pain following shingles.

This vaccine can also be administered to adults aged 18 and over who are at increased risk of shingles. Shingrix is an inactivated vaccine with over 90% effectiveness in preventing shingles infection and over 88% effectiveness in preventing post-herpetic neuralgia.

Unlike other vaccines like Zostavax, Shingrix maintains its effectiveness regardless of age. It works by enhancing the body’s natural immunity to the virus responsible for shingles infection (Varicella Zoster).

We recommend Shingrix for all individuals over the age of 50 to prevent shingles infection.

The Shingrix vaccination is not suitable for those under 50 years of age, those with an active Shingles infection or those pregnant or breastfeeding.
